Catalytic Infrastructure

After seeing the success of the GHESKIO Cholera Treatment Center – which localizes and decentralizes sanitation, health, and water services – MASS partnered with the Pershing Square Foundation to investigate if the model could be scaled to address additional communities struggling with waterborne diarrheal diseases. Over a period of three months, MASS worked with community health workers, community leaders, local nonprofit organizations, and government officials to assess the feasibility of a community-based water and wastewater sanitation system in one of the biggest slums in Port-au-Prince. The proposed model offers an alternative solution to centralized subterranean sanitation and sewerage infrastructure as yet to be implemented across Haiti.
